Do you know someone who can’t seem to keep their emotions in check? Maybe they’re always saying or doing the wrong things at the wrong times. Perhaps they are always judging others but have a difficult time receiving criticism. If this sounds like someone you know, chances are they have a problem with emotional intelligence.
What Is Low Emotional Intelligence?
The inability to effectively recognize emotions (in yourself and others) and use that information to influence your thinking and actions is referred to as low emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence (also known as “emotional quotient” or “EQ”) is important in almost every aspect of life. Indeed, many experts now believe that EQ, rather than IQ, may be more essential in determining overall life success. As a result, having a low EQ or emotional intelligence can have a severe impact on your interpersonal connections, as well as your mental and physical health.
When someone has a poor EQ, it can manifest in a variety of ways. There are nine classic indications of inadequate emotional intelligence listed below.
They Always Have to Be ‘Right’
You probably know someone who is often getting into fights with other people. Friends, relatives, coworkers, and even casual strangers become embroiled in arguments with these irritable people.
People with low EQ will frequently fight an issue to death while refusing to listen to anything else. Even if you show them that they are incorrect, they will argue that your facts are incorrect.
They have to win at any cost, and they can’t just “agree to disagree.” This is especially true if others criticize the individual for not understanding how others are feeling.
They’re Oblivious to Other People’s Feelings
Many people with poor EQ appear to be unconcerned about other people’s feelings. They may be taken aback by the fact that their partner is upset with them or that their coworkers dislike them. Furthermore, they become irritated when others expect them to know how they are feeling.
They Behave Insensitively
People with low EQ, for the most part, don’t know what to say. They may also be unable to distinguish between what is appropriate and what is not.
They might, for example, say something offensive at a funeral or make a joke shortly after a tragedy. They act as if you’re being unduly sensitive if you react to their out-of-line response.
It’s no wonder that they can’t perceive and respond appropriately to the emotional tone and mood because they have trouble understanding others’ feelings
They Blame Others for Their Problems
People with low EQ have limited understanding of how their emotions might cause issues. A person with little emotional intelligence will never hold themselves accountable for their actions.
When something goes wrong, their initial instinct is to point the finger at someone or something else. They may claim that they had no choice but to do what they did and that others simply do not comprehend their circumstance.
It’s your fault, for example, if somebody read your texts because you left your phone unlocked. They’ll make it someone else’s fault if they flunk an assignment, break a window, don’t get the job, or burn dinner.
They Have Poor Coping Skills
Low EQ might be indicated by an inability to cope with emotionally charged events. For persons with low emotional intelligence, strong emotions, whether their own or others’, are difficult to comprehend.
To avoid having to cope with the emotional aftermath, these people will often walk away from these situations. It’s also fairly typical for people to hide their genuine feelings.
They Have Emotional Outbursts
One of the components of emotional intelligence is the capacity to manage emotions. People who have a poor EQ have a hard time understanding and controlling their emotions. They may lash out in response to something they don’t understand, such as what they’re truly experiencing or why they’re so unhappy.
Unexpected emotional outbursts that seem exaggerated and uncontrollable may also be a sign of EQ deficiency. The tiniest of things can start them off on a rant that can last minutes, if not hours.
They Struggle With Relationships
People with poor EQ frequently have a small number of close pals. Close friendships necessitate mutual give-and-take, emotional sharing, compassion, and emotional support, all of which low-EQ individuals generally lack. People with poor EQ, on the other hand, are frequently rude and unfeeling.
They Turn Conversations Toward Themselves
People who are emotionally inept have a tendency to dominate the discourse. Even if they appear to be asking questions and paying attention, they always find a way to bring the conversation back to them. They usually have to show that they’ve been through something similar to what you’re going through, for better or worse.
Whatever you say, they’ve been there and done it. You’ve been in a car accident, haven’t you? They did, and their dog died as a result. Are you planning a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro? Four years ago, they scaled Mount Everest. If you want, they can email you a list of suggestions!
