There are some days when work gets so hectic, it’s impossible to get out of the silent slump. The only activity that seems of any interest is the completion of the work and calling it a day. The question that comes in hand is- How to build mental well-being in the workplace?
Well, people have different choices when it comes to de-stressing and having mental well-being but one of my personal favorites is Mindfulness and use of Emotional Intelligence. The ability to be aware of my feelings and acknowledging them instead of brushing them under the carpet always does the trick.
So, here we are going to look at some ways in which mindfulness and emotional intelligence can come handy in building relationships, having a peace of mind, and working with full capacity in a work setting all while promoting employee resilience.
The correlation between Mindfulness and de-stressing
Although this serves as a juxtaposition, being more present and attentive can actually take away from your stress than adding more to it. When you act lethargic and procrastinate, it just makes the stress of work pile up more. The more present you are with your work and up to date with the planning, you are going to feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness as you sail through your tasks.
One of the best tricks to mindfulness is treating yourself as you would treat a person very dear to you! You wouldn’t like them being stumped with work right? The same way if you keep yourself in a position of a very loved one that’s going to do the initial trick for you and make you more mindful not just in the workplace but in various junctions of life.
The use of Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence in the art of Communication
Knowing the right things to say can save you a lot of unwanted conversations and encounters in the workplace, which in turn would promote your mental well-being by increasing work efficiency. Being mindful of your words is very important when you are dealing with different types of people in the workplace.
Let me give you an example- Being more present in an office meeting would help you discuss the prospects and possibilities with your peers which can help them have a wider horizon of your and their own understanding. Being in the moment allows you to observe and not just react, and observing is what makes communication an art as well.
Easiness in adaptability due to Resilience
Once you get the hang of what being resilient is you start adapting to situations easily and quickly. Now there is no mantra to how resilience comes, but it is a quality which is learned over time. However, there is no doubt in the fact that the promoters of resilience are mindfulness and emotional intelligence. Resilience allows an individual to recover from any adversity and stay calm and composed.
By staying calm a person can assess the situation carefully and adapt to a positive change with a smile and negative change with a sense of improvement. Resilience also promotes employee retention, long term employees promote loyalty and positivity in the workplace. It is very important to have a balance in the workplace as the employees can unwind while working at their full potential.
Techniques of promoting Mindfulness in the workplace
Throughout the day, take short breaks to focus on your breath. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in, and let it out slowly. This quick reset can help you approach tasks with renewed clarity. Whether it’s a cup of tea or a beautiful sunset, take time to savor the small moments.
This practice not only brings joy but also enhances your ability to be fully present in your work interactions. When engaging in conversations, listen with your full attention. This fosters better understanding and connection with colleagues, fostering a harmonious work environment.
In a world of multitasking, mindfulness champions single-tasking. Focus on one task at a time, immersing yourself completely. This not only improves efficiency but also reduces stress. As you move from one task to another, take a moment to pause and reset. This can prevent mental clutter from carrying over and help you approach the next task with a clear mind.
Mindfulness in the workplace isn’t just about personal well-being; it also positively impacts the overall work atmosphere. Teams that practice mindfulness tend to communicate more effectively, collaborate better, and handle challenges with greater resilience.
Techniques of Promoting emotional intelligence in the workplace
Create a safe space for team members to share their thoughts and feelings without judgment. Set aside time for regular empathetic listening sessions, allowing everyone to connect on a deeper level. Encourage team members to share personal stories that have shaped their emotional experiences.
These storytelling circles not only foster a sense of vulnerability but also strengthen bonds among colleagues. Incorporate a quick daily mood check-in during team huddles. This not only provides insights into everyone’s emotional state but also opens doors for supportive conversations.
Organize workshops that focus on healthy conflict resolution. Equip your team with the tools to navigate disagreements while maintaining emotional harmony. Offer training on mindful communication. Teach the art of expressing oneself clearly while respecting the emotions of others. Provide feedback that emphasizes growth and improvement rather than criticism. This fosters a culture where feedback is seen as an opportunity for development.
Interconnectivity of Mindfulness, Emotional Intelligence, and Employee Resilience
Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence when used together are invincible, because imagine this- you are mindful of your surroundings, pay attention to people’s words, make observations and have a perspective on it; all while you can contemplate that perspective with the right knowledge of emotions. Resilience is promoted the most when emotional intelligence is mixed with mindfulness, as these prepare the employee both to face the problem and overcome it with much more ease.
